U.S. Car Recall Statistics [2024]

Car Accidents,Motor Vehicle Recalls,News • October 11, 2024

If you own or drive a car regularly in the United States, you’ve probably heard of motor vehicle recalls before. When a vehicle manufacturer or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) determines that “a vehicle, equipment, car seat, or tire creates an unreasonable safety risk or fails to meet minimum safety standards,” all vehicles impacted by the defect are recalled. When a recall is issued, the responsible manufacturer is required to fix the issue by repairing it, replacing it, offering the buyer a refund, or repurchasing the vehicle.

Every year, millions of Americans are impacted by motor vehicle recalls. Even a recall for a relatively minor issue that does not put anyone at risk can take substantial time to fix, as dealerships may need to order specialty parts or repair hundreds of vehicles over a short length of time. Many recalls are significant, potentially impacting a driver’s ability to safely operate their vehicle due to a serious defect or safety flaw. In a few rare instances, drivers may even be advised to park recalled vehicles outside due to a significant risk of spontaneous fires or explosions.

In this study, we analyzed NHTSA recall data from 2024 to determine which manufacturers have had the most recalled vehicles, the least recalled vehicles, and what major issues impact the cars people are driving on our shared roads every day. If you’ve been injured by a vehicle defect, the Jersey City car accident lawyers at Brady Reilly & Cardoso, LLC may be able to help.

Most & Least Vehicle Recalls in 2024 by Manufacturer

Most Car Recalls by Vehicle Manufacturer, 2024

As of October 9th, 2024, there have been 800 recorded recalls in the United States between all vehicle manufacturers. While this number is likely to increase over the final months of 2024, several vehicle manufacturers outpace all others in terms of how many recalls have been issued for their cars at this point in the year. For this study, we chose to focus on consumer vehicles, as opposed to also including data on commercial, federal, and emergency vehicles. While we believe it is worthwhile exploring data on other classes of vehicles as well, we wanted to dedicate our time and analysis to vehicles commonly driven by regular citizens.

Ford and Chrysler currently lead all manufacturers in the number of issued recalls for consumer vehicles in 2024, with 51 vehicle recalls each. BMW (26), General Motors (22), Mercedes (21), and Hyundai (20) are the other manufacturers that have had at least 20 recalls at this point in the year. A visual representation of vehicle recalls by manufacturer is included in the chart below.

Most Individual Motor Vehicle Recalls by Vehicle Manufacturer, 2024

Fewest Car Recalls by Vehicle Manufacturer, 2024

While most major car manufacturers will have at least the occasional unexpected issue requiring repairs, we wanted to acknowledge brands that have an excellent track record of producing road-worthy, safe vehicles. It is important to note that not all recall orders are created equal — some vehicle problems are more dangerous for drivers, require more extensive repairs, take more time to address, or may even require manufacturers to buy back afflicted cars. However, in general, it is ideal for manufacturers to have as few recalls as possible in any given year, as this means their vehicles generally avoid widespread defects.

When considering which manufacturers had the fewest recalls in 2024, we chose to look at manufacturers that have produced at least 30,000 vehicles at this point in the calendar year. It stands to reason that luxury brands such as Aston Martin, which typically produce less than 10,000 vehicles in a given year, will have fewer recalls than larger manufacturers.

On that note, the manufacturer with the fewest recalls, as of October 9th, 2024, is Mazda. At this point in the year, Mazda has only had four separate vehicle recalls. Rivian (5), Porsche (8), Honda (9), Tesla (11), and Toyota (13) are additional manufacturers that have had significantly fewer recalls than the brands highlighted in the previous section, “Most Car Recalls by Vehicle Manufacturer.” While this does not necessarily ensure that manufacturers with the least-recalled vehicles produce the safest cars, this is certainly something you should consider if you are in the market for a new or used vehicle. If you are interested in checking whether your vehicle has been recalled, the NHTSA offers a search feature you can use to look up your car’s VIN.

Which Recalls Impacted the Most People?

The impact of a recall can vary significantly based on many factors. It’s important to consider the severity of the defect in question, the feasibility of widespread repairs for all affected vehicles, and the potential consequences if drivers choose to ignore the recall order and continue driving their vehicles without modifications.

Another point of consideration is how many people will be impacted by a recall. If a vehicle of a rare make and model is recalled, only a handful of people will likely be impacted, since the affected car is not available in significant quantities. On the other hand, if a commonly driven car is recalled, the number of people who are negatively impacted can number in the thousands or even millions.

The chart below highlights the ten 2024 recalls impacting the largest number of “potentially affected” consumers, using NHTSA data. Each recall on this chart is for a specific component, structure, or problem, which may affect a single vehicle make and model or multiple classes of vehicles across several years of production.

As an example, the largest number of people potentially affected by a recall on this list are 2,193,869 Tesla drivers. This significant recall encapsulated certain 2012-2023 Model S, 2016-2024 Model X, 2017-2023 Model 3, 2019-2024 Model Y, and 2024 Cybertruck vehicles. Vehicles on this list had an issue where an incorrectly sized font was displayed on the instrument panel for the park, brake, and antilock brake system (ABS) lights, increasing the risk of a crash. Tesla released an over-the-air (OTA) system update to resolve the issue, at no cost to affected vehicle owners.

Largest Individual Vehicle Recalls, 2024

People Affected by Manufacturer Recalls, 2024

More than 21,000,000 people are estimated to have been impacted by a vehicle recall from January 1st, 2024 through October 9th, 2024. Drivers of Tesla, Chrysler, and Ford vehicles have been hit particularly hard by recalls this year. 12,768,009 people have been impacted by recalls issued by those three manufacturers throughout this point in the year, which is more than double the effect of the next twelve manufacturers combined. Eight of the manufacturers that we analyzed have had enough recalls to impact at least 1,000,000 estimated people.

While many recalls may not be particularly complex or time-consuming to repair, others can take significant time for a dealership to adequately address. When millions of consumers are involved in the process, it can take weeks or even months for dealerships to acquire the parts and tools they need to carry out repairs.

Do Not Drive Advisories, 2024

Most drivers in the U.S. have likely heard of recall orders before, even if they’ve been fortunate enough to avoid being affected themselves. However, a couple of high-priority recall orders do not occur often but are especially important to follow closely. A “Do Not Drive Advisory” indicates that drivers and other people on the road are at serious risk of harm if a vehicle is operated as-is. In most cases, an underlying problem can cause crashes, a loss of control while the vehicle is in motion, or serious injuries in the event of a collision. The following list is a series of all the problems resulting in Do Not Drive Advisories from January 1st, 2024 through October 9th, 2024.

Park Outside Advisories, 2024

In addition to Do Not Drive Advisories, it is important to keep an eye out for any recalls that escalate to the level of a “Park Outside Advisory.” When a recall transitions to a Park Outside Advisory, this means that there is a high risk of the affected vehicles spontaneously catching fire, even when not in operation. To prevent potential blazes from spreading to houses and other structures, vehicle owners are urged to park their cars outside and away from flammable materials until appropriate repairs are made. The following list is a series of all the problems resulting in Park Outside Advisories from January 1st, 2024 through October 9th, 2024.
