Tesla Recall Statistics [2025]

Tesla has been in the news constantly over the past few months. With yet another Cybertruck recall announced recently (the struggling truck’s eighth recall in less than two years), we decided to put together a historical study of every single Tesla motor vehicle recall. We track each of the manufacturer’s recall orders, from their first recall affecting the Roadster in 2009 to the latest recall issued on March 18, 2025 for the Cybertruck.

In this study, our Jersey City car accident lawyers discovered which Tesla vehicle has been recalled most frequently, analyzed over-the-air versus physical recall orders, tracked recalls by year, and even built a database that includes key details on every single vehicle recall issued by the manufacturer. Read on to learn more about Tesla recalls over the years.

How Many Tesla Recalls Occur Annually?

Tesla’s first-recorded vehicle recall order was in 2009 for an issue affecting an estimated 345 Roadster models. However, the bulk of Tesla’s recalls have been issued from 2021 to 2024. During that four-year period, the manufacturer averaged fifteen recall orders per year. To date, 2022 has been the year with the most Tesla recalls issued over a twelve-month span (20). Two of the recalls issued in 2022, 22V702000 and 22V045000, earn the dubious honor of making our “Tesla’s Largest Vehicle Recalls” list, affecting an estimated 1,096,762 and 817,143 drivers.

A breakdown of Tesla recalls by year is displayed in the row chart below.

Tesla Recalls by Year

Tesla’s Most-Recalled Models

Millions of Tesla vehicles have been recalled over the years. We analyzed NHTSA recall data to determine which Tesla makes and models appeared most frequently. As of March 24, 2025, the Model S is the most frequently recalled Tesla vehicle. Model S vehicles have been listed in thirty-eight separate recall orders, which is just slightly higher than the thirty-seven recalls naming the Model X.

It’s worth noting the eight Cybertruck recalls as significant in this section. The Cybertruck has been recalled far fewer times than Tesla vehicles such as the Model S and Model X. However, the Cybertruck was first delivered to consumers in November of 2023. The Cybertruck has thus been recalled eight times over a period of seventeen months. In comparison, the Model S has been recalled thirty-eight times over eleven separate years, averaging just 3.45 recalls per year.

A full analysis of Tesla recalls by make and model is displayed in the following row chart.

Tesla Recalls by Make & ModelTesla’s Largest Vehicle Recalls

Individual Tesla recalls vary greatly in the number of vehicle owners affected. In some cases, a recall affected only a single vehicle. For example, Tesla recall 22V264000 was targeted towards a single 2022 Model X vehicle that was built without a body structure reinforcement bracket in the second-row seat. Tesla replaced the vehicle in question for its owner for free. However, the vast majority of recalls affect an entire production line of vehicles.

Tesla’s largest recall to date, 24V051000, affected an estimated 2,193,869 vehicle owners. This 2024 Tesla recall addressed a problem where the instrument panel of more than two million vehicles displayed an incorrect font size for the Brake, Park, and Antilock Brake System (ABS) warning lights. Fortunately, this recall was promptly addressed via an over-the-air software update, thus minimizing disruption for the millions of vehicle owners affected.

To date, Tesla has had four recalls that have affected at least one million vehicle owners, per NHTSA estimates. The manufacturer’s five largest recall orders are displayed in the row chart below.

Largest Tesla Recalls of All Time

How Many Tesla Recalls Were Solved by Over-the-Air Updates?

Motor vehicle recalls can be divided into two separate groups: over-the-air and physical recalls. An over-the-air recall fixes a given problem with a quick software update, without drivers needing to bring their vehicle to a dealership to have physical repair work done on their car, truck, or SUV. Over-the-air solutions are generally offered when a vehicle’s issue has to do with buggy, unsafe, or defective software. To date, thirty-one of Tesla’s eighty-two issued recalls have been corrected by an over-the-air technology update. Tesla’s first over-the-air recall solution was issued in 2014 (recall 14V006000).

Physical recalls require drivers to bring their vehicle to a dealership or authorized manufacturer repair center, where physical work will be done to restore the affected vehicle to a road-safe condition. When a vehicle needs parts checked, repaired, or replaced, an over-the-air software update would be insufficient to properly address the problem. Tesla has issued fifty-one physical recalls as of March 24, 2025.

Over the Air vs. Physical Recalls

Comparing Tesla Vehicle & Equipment Recalls

When an entire vehicle or major components of a vehicle are deemed unsafe for operation, a vehicle recall is issued. Vehicle recalls are issued for a wide range of problems, from technology defects to parts that are prone to mechanical failure. The nature and scope of a vehicle recall determines whether the issue can be fixed by a simple over-the-air software update or physical repairs by the liable manufacturer.

On the other hand, an equipment recall is issued when a specific vehicle part, such as a vehicle seat or side mirror, has a known defect. In most cases, the manufacturer will replace the defective equipment with a properly-installed, safe alternative at no cost to the vehicle’s owner. To date, only two of Tesla’s eighty-two recalls have been for equipment. Those recalls are 22E092000 (a recall for certain 2021 Model S exterior side rearview mirrors) and 16E091000 ( a recall for certain Universal Mobile Connector Adapters).

A comparison of Tesla vehicle and equipment recalls is shown in the pie chart below.

Vehicle vs. Equipment RecallsHow Safe is the Tesla Cybertruck?

The Tesla Cybertruck has been a controversial vehicle, to say the least. The Cybertruck’s supporters praise its unconventional design, nimble acceleration, and responsive steering. However, the vehicle’s detractors focus on alleged design flaws, poor-quality manufacturing, the potential for swift rusting, and the inherent fire risk of the truck’s electric battery. The embattled truck has been recalled eight times since it was first delivered to consumers in November of 2023. The Cybertruck’s problems have varied significantly over that seventeen-month timeframe, including:

  • Technological issues
  • Exterior parts detaching from the vehicle
  • Issues with the truck’s driver inverter
  • An accelerator pedal pad becoming dislodged and trapping the gas pedal

While practically every vehicle that is produced in substantial numbers will have at least one recall issued eventually, the sheer volume of Cybertruck recalls issued over such a short timeframe does merit some concern. There are additional concerns that the Cybertruck’s design make it challenging for bystanders and first responders to provide assistance to crash victims after a collision. In November of 2024, a horrific crash and subsequent fire claimed the lives of three people in a Cybertruck. The vehicle struck a retaining wall and caught fire. Bystanders immediately attempted to provide assistance, but were unable to operate the vehicle’s doors and could only get one passenger out after breaking one of the vehicle’s windows.

Industry safety analysts note that this is not the first time people have passed away in a Tesla vehicle because they could not exit a wrecked car or bystanders could not reach the victims to provide aid. Like some other electric vehicles, Cybertrucks rely upon electronic power to disengage door locks. If the vehicle is taken out of commission by a wreck, it may be impossible to operate the doors. Although Cybertrucks do have emergency pull cords to operate the doors in an emergency, they may require passengers to remove paneling to access them and not all riders may know about this safety feature. Analysts suspect that it is impossible for someone to open a Cybertruck’s door from outside the vehicle if it has been disabled in a crash, posing a significant safety risk to the vehicle’s inhabitants in the event of a fire or other environmental hazard.
